The area of Mékinac is located in the northern portion of the Mauricie region, in a wooded region that abounds with lakes and rivers. The name Mékinac is an Algonquin word that means “turtle”. The area is separated in its middle by the Saint-Maurice River, which makes the area a real paradise for fishers. Other outdoor activities can also be done here, like river or sea kayaking, rafting, canoeing, hiking, biking and ATV. Several Z.E.C. (controlled harvesting zones) are located in the area, for the joy of hunters and fishers.
River kayaking and rafting enthusiasts will have fun on the Matawin River, since it is the longest section of class 3 and 4 rapids in the province of Quebec. The area of Mékinac is well known everywhere in the world thanks to its famous Festival Western de Saint-Tite. Each year, more than 400,000 visitors take over the streets of this small town to live a few days of entertainment. Welcome in cowboy country!
