Shawinigan (Grand-Mère)

A Diversified Economy

The city of Grand-Mère was founded in 1898, at the time when the authorities were trying to stop the massive emigration of French-Canadians towards the United States. To do so, many territories of the Mauricie were cleared in order to offer settlers pieces of land that only needed to be sowed.

When it was founded, “Grand’Mère” was a village. In 1920, it became a town, then acquired the status of a city in 1970. Grand-Mère owes a large part of its fame to hydroelectricity, but also to pulp and paper, chemistry and textile industries.

Grand-Mère is also a city where it is good to have fun. It is home to a very large karting track, a golf course and a curling alley. In January 2002, the city of Grand-Mère merged with the new city of Shawinigan. The name of Grand-Mère is still used to designate its former territory.
