Merged in 2002 like the city of Trois-Rivières, Shawinigan now groups together the former cities of Shawinigan, Grand-Mère and Shawinigan-Sud, as well as the municipalities of Saint-Gérard-des-Laurentides, Saint-Georges de Champlain, Lac-à-la-Tortue and Saint-Jean-des-Piles in addition to the Mauricie National Park of Canada.
Outdoor and cultural activity lovers won’t be bored in Shawinigan! The Cité de l’énergie theme park will tell you the story of the industrial city’s development and of its builders. The Site historique national de l’ancienne aluminerie de Shawinigan (the Shawinigan old aluminium smelter’s site), for its part, invites you to visit the international exhibition of the Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. The Notre-Dame-de-la-Présentation and Saint-Pierre churches are also worth a stop. Their architecture and interior decorations are worthy of the most beautiful religious buildings.
The Mauricie National Park of Canada allows outdoor activity enthusiasts to go canoeing, kayaking, hiking, biking, wildlife watching, fishing, go on a cruise, play golf skiing, sliding, skating, snowmobiling and much more! Numerous festivals and events will also enliven your stay in the Shawinigan area, such as the Festival de théâtre de rue de Shawinigan and the Classique internationale de canots de la Mauricie. At the parc de l’île Melville, young and old will be enchanted by the treetop adventure course. Five different courses will take you across suspended bridges, footbridges, nets and rope bridges, and you will even get to swing on a Trazan rope.
