When you step inside the Old prison of Trois-Rivières, you enter the prison life of the 1960s and the 1970s. This prison was opened in 1822 and was built by famous architect François Baillargé. In 1978, i twas classified historical monument and in 1986, it had to close because of insalubrity. Back in those days, it was the oldest functional corrections establishment in Canada!
During the experience visit “in PRISON”, a former inmate will be your guide. He will tell you everything about life in prison and will make you visit the cells, the “hole” and the dungeons. You can even ask numerous questions about the life of prisoners and about prison life in Quebec from this epoch to nowadays. The experience is disturbing! For a few years now, the Old prison even offers groups of visitors to spend the night in prison with the activity “sentenced to one night”, during which you will live as a prisoner, will be photographed and guardians will even take your finger prints! The Old prison of Trois-Rivières offers you a genuine… and unique experience!
